Lieutenant Richard
Long,
Newport Beach, California, Police Department -
Lieutenant Richard Long is a 24
year veteran of the Newport Beach Police Department. He has worked all
divisions and has 17 years of supervisory experience. Lt. Long instructs
in robbery investigation at the California Presley Institute of Criminal
Investigations and the POST Basic Police Academy in Orange County. Lt.
Long’s presentation showed us how to work a major case
robbery investigation from a local perspective, using a hands on
review of the largest organized crime robbery crew that has ever operated
in our nation. The Rabb robbery gang did over 150 capers nationwide, were
suspected in 20 homicides and
made over $100 million dollars committing their crimes. Lt. Long’s
involvement came when the crew did 2 machine gun robberies of Newport
Beach jewelry stores, netting $10 million dollars. Lt. Long’s
presentation covered all of the aspects of investigation and included many
stories along the way. |

Commander Dave
Pettinari,
Pueblo County, Colorado, Sheriff's Office -
Commander
Dave Pettinari is a 12 year veteran of the Pueblo County Sheriff’s
Office where he has supervised records, payroll, personnel, evidence and
property, logistics and budget management. His current duties include
planning, projects management, media relations, grants writing and
computer crimes. He formerly worked as a radio TV and newspaper reporter
for 12 years. Commander Pettinari holds a master’s degree in journalism
from Marquette University and a bachelor’s degree in political science
from Regis College. Commander Pettinari’s course taught investigators how to get on the Internet, what it looks like, the risks,
scams and frauds, tracking down Internet suspects and tapping into the
wealth of information that suspects already are using to their advantage.
Commander Pettinari showed investigators how to share information with
the public, find intelligence, investigative leads and resources, use
secure intranets among agencies and how to develop a good law enforcement
home page.

Detective Sergeant Jack
Giroud,
Los Angeles Police Department -
Sgt. Giroud is a 44
year veteran of the LAPD with over 37 years in the Robbery/Homicide
Division. Sgt. Giroud has been involved in nearly every major
investigation in L.A. during the last 30 years. He has always been very
active in the California and Southern California Robbery Associations.
Sgt. Giroud teaches or has taught at the L.A. Police Academy, Pasadena
City College and San Jose State University. He supervises and coordinates
major robbery problems and street robberies, investigates major
kidnappings and extortions, supervises all line-ups and maintains M.O.
files regarding market, liquor store, drug store, dairy and gas station
robberies. Sgt. Giroud drew on his many and varied experiences to provide an
interactive presentation on robbery stakeouts. Read

Chief Deputy District
Attorney Mitch Morrissey,
Denver District Attorney's Office - Mr.
Morrissey has worked for the Denver District Attorney's Office since 1984.
For the past ten years he has served as Chief Deputy District Attorney and
is presently in charge of the Gang Unit. As One of the lead prosecutors in
the D.A.'s Office, Mr. Morrissey is considered an expert in the field of
DNA, having prosecuted significant cases involving DNA evidence. Most
recently, Mr. Morrissey was sworn in as a Boulder District Attorney and
worked on the thirteen month long grand jury investigation into the death
of Jon Benet Ramsey. Mr. Morrissey spoke about DNA forensic analysis
for investigators. Mr. Morrissey showed us what evidence to look for,
where to look and how to handle DNA evidence. He provided surprising
examples of where DNA evidence has been found. Mr. Morrissey also
talked about the national database, CODIS, and how it relates to and can be
used in conjunction with our investigations. |
